Recoil Calculation in Foot-Pounds

Todays rifles all have recoil pads to absorb the actual recoil over fractions of a second thus providing less felt recoil by the shooter. The author Ed Hale often uses recoil  pads such as Limb-saver™ and  Pachmayr Decelerator™ thus reducing felt recoil by approx. 50%. a 40 ft-lb rifle recoil will feel like a 20 ft-lb recoil.
